In the Name of God Amen. I Charles Phillip of ye pish of Goytre in ye County of Monmouth & Diocese of Landaff, labourer, being infirm and weak in body but of sound and perfect memory (praise be given to Almighty God) do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following.

First I bequeath my soul to Almighty God my maker hoping through ye merit of death and passion of my saviour Jesus Xt to have full and perfect pardon of all my sins.  I commit my body to ye earth to be decently buried and as for ye temporall estate it has pleased God to bestow upon me I, I give devise and bequeath ye same as followeth:

Imp’s  I give, devise and bequeath to Catherine by beloved wife all ye leasehold land wth ye house and barn adjoyning in as long and ample manner to enjoy ye same, being part of ye waste of Pellenny Comon for and during her natural life.

And after her decease I devise and bequeath ye sd lease together with its appurtenances to Margaret my beloved daughter for and during her naturall life wch sd lease in ye pish of Goytre as now fully may appear upon ye lease.

And after ye death of ye said Margaret, I give, devise and bequeath ye sd lease to John my beloved son and after his decease to Rachell my beloved daughter for and during her naturall life, wch sd —- have their lives mentioned in ye sd lease.

Item. I give, devise and bequeath another lease hold yt is part of Pellenny Comon, wth ye leasehold land of Wm Prichard and ye household lands of Ann Mathews widdow, to Jane my beloved daughter for and during her naturall life.

And after her decease, I devise and bequeath yt sd lease to my beloved daughter Elizabeth, and after her decease to my beloved son John for and during his life wch ye sd lives have their lives exposed in ye sd lease.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son John ye sum of four pounds of lawfull Brittish money to be pd him upon two equal payments wthin 2 years by my sd daughter Margarett after she enjoys ye sd lease.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary ye sum of ten shillings and likewise to my granddaughter Elizabeth, ye daughter of James Wm. ye sum of ten shillings, wch sd sum of twenty shillings is to be pd to my daughter Jane at ye expiration of one year after she enjoys ye sd lease.

Lastly I do nominate and appoint my beloved daughter Margarett to be executor of this my last will and Testament, revoking all others by me made heretofore.

This is the last will and testament of me, James Morgan of the parish of Goytrey in the county of Monmouth, cooper.

I give and devise all that my messuage or dwelling house with the outhouses farm and lands thereto belonging and held therewith situate and lying in the said parish of Goytrey, unto my dear wife Ann Morgan and her assigns for her life, and in case of the determination of that estate by any means in her life time I give and devise the same unto my loving friends James Gwatkin of the said parish of Goytrey farmer, and Abraham Williams of the hamlet of Glascoed in the said county, farmer and their heirs during the natural life of my said wife upon trust for her and her assigns and by the usual ways and means to support, contingent remainders.

And after the decease of my said wife Ann Morgan I give and devise the said messuage and premises unto my natural son James Morgan who now lives with me and to the heirs of his body, but in case the said James Morgan shall happen to depart this life leaving no child or children or remoter issue of his body living at the time of his decease or born in due time afterwards or being any child or children or remoter issue of my said son James Morgan living at such the time of his decease or born in due time afterwards if all of them shall die under the age of twenty one years and without leaving lawful issue if his her or their body or respective bodies, then I give and devise my said messuage farm  lands and premises to Mary Davies, wife of Owen Davies of Goytrey aforesaid, labourer and her assigns for her life for her own sole and separate use and in case of the determination of that estate by any means in the life time of the said Mary Davies then I give and devise the same farm lands messuage and premises unto the said James Gwatkin and Abraham Williams and their heirs during the natural life of the said Mary Davies upon trust for her and her assigns and by the usual and means to support, contingent, remainders.

And after the decease of the said Mary DaviesI give and devise my said messuage farm lands and premises unto the eldest son of the said Mary Davies who shall be living at the time of her decease his heirs and assigns for ever but if there shall be no son of the said Mary Davies living at the time of her decease then unto the eldest daughter of the said MaryDavies living at such the time of her decease her heirs and assigns for ever and if there shall be no such daughter of the said Mary Davies then unto my own right heirs for ever I give and bequeath all my monies, securities for money, household furniture and personal estate of what nature or kind soever unto my said dear wife Ann Morgan her executors, administrators and assigns absolutely subject nevertheless to the payment of my just debts and funeral and testamentary expenses with the payment whereof I also charge my said real estate in aid of my personal estate if necessary.

I hereby appoint my said wife sole executrix of this my will and hereby revoking all former and other will by me at any time heretofore made and declare this only to be my last will and testament.

Know all men by these presents that we Charles Elias Bird of the parish of Goytre in the county of Monmouth esquire and the Reverend WilliamEvans of Usk in the county of Monmouth Clerk are held and firmly bound unto the right Reverend father in God Edward by divine permission Lord Bishop of Llandaff in the sum of Forty Pounds of good and lawful money of Great Britain to be paid unto the said Lord Bishop or to his certain Attorney his executors administrators or assigns to which payment well and truly to be made.  We oblige ourselves and each of us by himself for the whole our and each of our heirs, executors and administrators firmly by these presents.  Sealed with our seals, dated the twenty seventh day of October in the seventh year of the reign if our sovereign Lady Victoria by the grace of God of the united Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland , Queen, defender of the faith and in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred and forty three.

The condition of this obligation is such that if the above bounden Elias Bird the lawful son one of the next of kin and administrator of all and singular the goods chattels and credits of Elizabeth Bird late of the parish of Goytrey in the county of Monmouth, widow deceased.  Do make or cause to be made a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased which have or shall come into the hands possession or knowledge of him the said Elias Bird or into the hands or possession of any other person or persons for him and the same so made exhibit or cause to be exhibited into the Registry of the Consistory court of Landaff at or before the last day of April next ensuing and the same goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased at the time of her death which at any time after shall come to the hands, possession of the said Elias Bird or into the hands and possession of any other person or persons of him do well and truly administer according to law And further do make or cause to be made a true and just account of the said administration at or before the last day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty four.  And all the rest and residue of the said goods, chattels and credits which shall be found remaining upon the said administrators account the same being first examined and allowed of by the judge or judges for the time being of the said court shall deliver and pay unto such persons respectively by he said judge or judges by his or their decree or sentence pursuant to the true intent and meaning of a late act of parliament in the two and twentieth and three and twentieth years of the reign of our late sovereign Lord King Charles the second instituted an act for the better settling intestate estates shall limit and appoint and if it shall hereafter appear that any last will and testament was made by the said deceased and the executors therin named do exhibit the same into the said court making request to have it allowed and approved accordingly if the said Elias Bird above bounden being thereunto lawfully required do render and deliver the said letters of administrations approbation of such testament being first had and made in the said court then this obligation to be void or else to remain in full force and virtue.

I devise and bequeath all the residue of my real and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever to which I shall be entitled at my death unto my Trustees UPON TRUST that my Trustees shall sell, call in and convert into money the same or such part thereof as shall not consist of money with power to postpone such sale calling in and conversion for such period as my Trustees shall judge expedient (with particular reference to the shares held by me in Cerebos Ltd) and out of the money so produced and out of my ready money shall pay my funeral and testamentary expenses and debts and the legacies, bequests by this my will or any codicil hereto and all invest the residue of the said moneys in any authorised trust, investments with power from time to time to vary such investments for others of a like nature and shall stand possessed of the residue of such moneys and the investments for/the time being representing the same (herein called “my Residuary Fund”) upon the following trusts:

  1. UPON TRUST to pay the income thereof to myself wife during her life.
  2. SUBJECT to the aforesaid life interest of my said wife upon trust to divide the same into five equal parts and to hold the same as to both capital and income thereof:-

AS to two fifths parts thereof UPON TRUST for my said son Richard George de Fer Byrde absolutely PROVIDED that should my said son predecease me without leaving issue him surviving then I DIRECT that his share shall be held by my Trustees upon the trusts hereinafter set out with regard to the remainder of my Residuary Trust Fund.
  4. AS to the remaining three fifth parts thereof UPON TRUST for my three remaining children, namely Pamela Morrison Murray and Rachel Olivia Byrde and Christopher Granville Byrde on his attaining the age of twenty one year’s absolutely in equal shares.
  5. PROVIDED NEVERTHELESS that in case any child of mine has died or shall die in my lifetime leaving issue living at my death who being male attain the age of twenty one years or being female attain that age or previously marry such issue shall stand in the place of such deceased child and take per stirpes and equally between them if more than one the share of my residuary trust fund which such deceased child would have taken if he or she had survived me and had attained a vested interest.
  6. ANY trustee being a solicitor or other person engaged in any profession or business may be so employed or act and shall be entitled to charge and be paid all professional or other charges or any business or act done by him or by his firm in connection with the trusts hereof including acts which a Trustee could have done personally.
  7. I DESIRE that my body shall be cremated and my ashes deposited in the family grave of my father and mother in Goytrey Churchyard.

Samuel Deverall 1910

LATE MR. SAMUEL DEVERALL Councillor.

Samuel Deverall of 44, Cross-street. Abergavenny, grocer, a former mayor of the borough, who died on August 3 last at Pant Glas Farm, Goytrey, Monmouth, aged 44 years, left estate of the gross value of £3,703, of which the net personalty has been sworn at £1,613. Probate of his will, dated April 1, 1892, has been granted to his widow. The testator left all his property to his wife. expressing himself as “having a perfect trust in her, and, therefore, knowing she will do that which is just and right for our son.”

John Jones 1904

John Jones (my great great grandfather and parish clerk for nearly 40 years) of “Glanynant” Upper Goytre, in the County of Monmouth, formerly of Penwern Cottages, Goytre. Who died on the 31st day of July in the county of Glamorgan at 207, Arabella Street, Cardiff, at the home of his son Edwin Jones.

This is the last will and testament of me John Jones of Penwern Cottages, Goytre, in the county of Monmouth, roadman.
I give and bequeath all my household furniture and housekeeping effects to my daughter Jane, now residing with me and as to all my real estate (if any) and all my personal estate of what nature or kind soever and whatsoever situate I give and devise unto my four children, namely, Jane, Edwin, Emily and John equally between them.
And I appoint my said daughter Jane and my said son Edwin Executrix and Executor of this my Will in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this fifteenth day of August1892.

Evan Morris 1946

Evan Morris (my great grandfather) of Bedfont in the parish of Goytre who died there on 23rd January 1946.
Administration of his estate was granted to William Morgan of Speedwell House Hardwick in the parish of Abergavenny and Wilfred King of 21 Merthyr Road Abergavenny, railway clerk.
This is the last will and testament of me, Evan Morris of “Bedfont” Goytre Pontypool in the County of Monmouthshire, made this 9th day of March 1942.

I give and bequeath unto my son Edwin John Morris, Albert Henry Morris, Ernest Charles Morris and my daughter Florence Garland, also my daughter-in-law, Winnie Morris, the proceeds of the sale of my furniture and household effects which I desire to be sold after my death and to be equally divided between the aforesaid persons. This also refers to outdoor effects of all classes.
I furthermore state I wish the amount payable by the Prudential Assurance Company after payment of my funeral expenses to be equally divided between my four children, Edwin John Morris, Albert Henry Morris, Ernest Charles Morris and Florence Garland, after the amount which Florence and Ernest have paid into the Prudential Assurance Company for me have been deducted and handed over to them.
I furthermore direct that all money in the Post Office Savings Account, National Savings Certificates and all money in the house also due to me from any source, shall, after giving £2 to my niece Gladys Probert,  £2 to Alice Davies,  £2 to Ellen Thomas and all out of pocket expenses to my executors be equally divided amongst my four children.
