Hutchinson, David – 1929

January 4th – Obituary – Mr David Hutchinson of Nantyderry

The parish of Goytrey has lost it’s oldest inhabitant, by the death, which occurred on Xmas day, of Mr David Hutchinson, of the Refreshment Rooms, Nantyderry, of which he had been licensee for the past 19 years.

It was said that no man was better loved in Nantyderry and Goytrey. He was possessed of an exceptionally cheerful disposition and he had a faculty of making friends. He will be sorely missed.

Aged 73 years he was born at the Vrow Farm Goytrey, and hailed from the oldest family in the parish of Goytrey. His mother was a native of Goytrey, but his father was a scot.

Deceased was a keen churchman, having been for many years a sidesman of St Peter’s Church, Goytrey, and in politics he was an enthusiastic Conservative. He never took an active part in public affairs, but always interested himself in anything that was good for the district. For about 18 years he had been an agent for Messrs Marsh and Sons, coal merchants, Abergavenny, and it was while delivering coal on Thursday last that he had a stroke and was obliged to take to his bed. Hitherto he had enjoyed comparatively good health.

He is survived by his wife, with whom the deepest sympathy is felt.

The esteem in which Mr Hutchinson was held was exemplified by the large attendance of sympathisers at the funeral, which took place on Saturday, the interment being at St Peter’s Churchyard.

Jenkins, Mr James – 1932

In His 95th Year

Death of Goytrey’s Grand Old Man

Mr James Jenkins

We regret to record the death of Mr James Jenkins, after a comparatively short illness at his home Ty Llwyd, Goytrey on Sunday.

The deceased gentleman was in his 95th year and was truly regarded at the “grand old man” of the district. His great age took him back to early Victorian days of which he had a very clear and vivid memory, for his descriptions of outstanding events which took place in the locality and county long ago were always interesting to hear, particularly of the Chartist Riots of 1839 in which his father took part and of the building of the GWR main line nearby, when his cottage was converted into a cider-house.

He had spent all his long life in Goytrey where he was well known and much respected especially by the older inhabitants who remember his gigantic stature when he stood 6ft 6ins tall and weighed over 18 stone.

As a timber cutter he had worked on the Pontypool and Llanover estates and many a stubborn oak fell beneath his sturdy stroke.

A Unique Family

It was remarkable that he had no illnesses before and he possessed all his faculties unimpaired to the last. As the youngest of several brothers, all of whom were admired for their stature and longevity he was the last of a unique family.

Until quite recently he could shoot as straight as the best marksman around and loved to follow the Monmouthshire hounds. His stories of old hunting days, when his woodsman’s tools were often thrown aside to join in the chase, were typical of late Victorian times. Even after his retirement from a life of strenuous labour in the woods, he was ceaselessly active with his orchard and garden and took a great interest in local and national affairs, though he could never read nor write.

He attributed his great age to the healthy surroundings, to plain peaceful living, abstention from modern luxuries and to fresh air exercise.

His wife, who survives him, is 93 and wonderfully smart for her age. In fact they have been an exceptional pair.

The funeral was at Goytrey Churchyard on Thursday.

Jenkins, Mr Tom – 1940

Friday 15th March – The Late Mr Tom Jenkins

Farmed New Barn Goytrey for nearly 50 years

By the death of Mr Tom Jenkins in his 80th year there has passed out of the life and business of Goytrey and districts one of it’s most respected and best loved inhabitant.

He had farmed New Barn Farm for 50 years and was widely known in Pontypool and Abergavenny markets and fairs.

A keen judge of stock, especially in the days when horses were a farmers most valuable asset, he owned and traded in some splendid animals, but he will always be remembered by those of his day and generation for his many excellent qualities of mind and heart. His neighbourliness and his buoyant optimism and witty conversation acted as a stimulating tonic to those who came in contact with him.

He was a member of Goytrey Parish Council for more than 20 years. About 5 years ago he relinquished farming and retired to a bungalow at Goytrey, but he was active until a few months ago.

The internment took place on Tuesday at St Peter’s Church Goytrey and was attended by many neighbours and friends.

He leaves a widow and grown up family of two daughters and one son.

The bearers were six cousins, the Jenkins family of Pentwyn Farm, Mamhilad.

Wreaths were sent by: His loving wife, children and grandchildren; Willie and Sarah; Will, Gladys and Stan; Will, Sarah and family, Griffithstown; Vera and Dal; Polly, Walter, Arthur and Mary; All at Mynachdy; Mrs E Jones, Lily and Arthur; Parish Council, Goytrey; Mr & Mrs Whitney and family; Mr & Mrs Arnold, New Barn Farm; Mr Nichols, Ty Cooke and family; All at Lan Farm; Mr & Mrs Howells, Brook Farm; Mr & Mrs Shepherdson, Monkswood; Mr S J Walton, Mamhilad; Mr & Mrs J Brookes, Crewe; Mr Jackson, Jack, Sheila and Ethel Case.
